The Region 1 Health Research and Development Consortium (R1HRDC) – Capacity Building Committee (CBC) have successfully conducted a two-day in person Strategic Communication on Health Research Training and Workshop last May 16-17, 2023 at El Cielito Hotel, Baguio City. Since CBC members have identified a challenge that not all researchers are equipped with the strategic communication skills to convey the outcome and recommendations of their research, thus the said training was conducted. Their objective is to enhance the knowledge of the participants on the use of basic principles use in strategic communication and to develop their skills on effective written, oral, non-verbal and visual communications gearing focusing on health research. Dr. Marvin F. Munar was the resource speaker of the training.

 

 

The Day-1 of the training focused on lectures and an open interactive session on the different communication plans. The 31 participants were divided into 5 groups wherein each team were assigned to different types of communication strategy (oral and written presentation) to convey the result of their finished paper. Group I had a 3-minute pitch project brief; Group 2 had a 5-minute innovation negotiation; Group 3 delivered a 10-minute research forum oral presentation; Group 4 did a 5-minute policy brief; and Group 5 had a 5-minute turn-around proposal/quality assurance pitch. On the day-2, a mini-research conference was conducted wherein the 5 groups presented their outputs based on their assignments. Ms. Ma. Velen Joven and Dr. Maria Lyn Cortez, both CBC member, Dr. Unity Cortez the CBC Chair, and the speaker Dr. Munar served as the panel of judges/reactors.

 

Dr. Cortez created the training design. She emphasized the importance of the training to ensure that the purpose of each research would be utilized and comprehended by the intended beneficiaries.
