To capacitate more the researchers in the region in coming up with a meaningful and quality research papers, the Capability Building Committee (CBC) of the Region 1 Health Research and Development Consortium (R1HRDC) conducted the three-day Training on Data Analysis last July 12-14, 2016 at the Veniz Hotel, Baguio City. Said training was a sequel to the Basic Research Methods Training held last October 2015.

The main objectives of the training for the participants were to (1) understand the basic concepts and principles in the application of statistical tools for data analysis and (2) identify the most appropriate statistical tools needed for data analysis and meet the objectives of the research proposals they are developing.

There were seventeen (17) participants who attended the said training most of whom were medical practitioners and members of research institutions. Participants were from Lyceum Northwestern University (LNU), Virgen Milagrosa University Foundation (VMUF), Dagupan Doctors Villaflor Memorial Hospital (DDVMH), Ilocos Training and Regional Medical Center (ITRMC), Don Mariano Marcos Memorial State University (DMMMSU), University of Northern Philippines (UNP) and Mariano Marcos Memorial Hospital and Medical Center.

Dr. Ophelia M. Mendoza a former professor from the University of the Philippines (UP) College of Epidemiology and Biostatistics was the the training's learning provider. This was officially opened by Engr. Ismael Gurtiza, vice chairman of the CBC, followed by an inspiring message from Dr. Leo B. Solis, vice chairman of the R1HRDC.

As a way of introduction and levelling off, participants introduced themselves and answered random questions. From here, Dr. Mendoza presented her objectives and course syllabus. Afterwhich, she articulated on the series of lectures that included the following :

Day 1

Factors to be Considered in Data Analysis, Health Indicators, Data Presentation, Constructing Statistical Table

Day 2

Measures of Central Tendency, Dispersion and Location, Introduction to Statistical Inference, Estimating Means and Proportions and Investigating Relationships Between Variables

Day 3

Looking at Associations Between Variables, Regression and Correlation, Non-parametic Statistical Tests, Summary of Data Analysis Techniques

After the informative lectures and exercises given by Dr.Mendoza, a presentation of research outputs from pre-identified volunteers among the participants was done at the end of the training.

R1HRDC to address health concerns in Region 1, to fund research proposals up to 500k

Initiated in partnership with the Philippine Council for Health Research and Development and Department of Science and Technology (DOST-PCHRD), the Region 1 Health Research and Development Consortium (R1HRDC) thru the Research and Development Committee (R&D) is now calling for research proposals that are aimed to address pressing and current health concerns in the region.

At least Php 500,000 in funding support from the Regional Research Fund of the PCHRD will be used to support researches spanning National Priority Research Agenda, Regional Priority Research Agenda (Local Governance), Health Needs of Special Group, Bio-Medical Research and Climate Change.

Interested proponents are expected to submit their research proposals in capsule or full blown not later than August 30, 2016. The following format is required for the submitted proposals: (1) Project Title, (2) Project Leader, (3) Significance of the Proposal, (4) Methodology, (5) Expected Output/s and (6) Line Item Budget.

With more than a hundred proposals accepted every year, the project also seeks to uplift local researches to effect change and improve the quality of life of people in the region.

Proposals should be sent to Ms. Ana Gay D. Ranga c/o Mariano Marcos Memorial Hospital and Medical Center or be emailed at This email address is being protected from spambots. A two-day Basic Ethics Training was held last May 11-12, 2016 at the Cordillera Inn Hotel and Restaurant, #29 Mena Crisologo St., Vigan City, Ilocos Sur conducted by the Region 1 Health Research and Development Consortium (R1HRDC) in cooperation with the Philippine Council on Health Research and Development (PCHRD).

This Training aims to enhance the awareness on the importance of ethics in research and improve capacity for participation in the research ethics review system. Specifically, it was design for participants to be able to (1) trace the development of research ethics, (2) recognize the underlying ethical principles in different international guidelines , (3) refer  to national laws and guidelines when necessary, (4) commit to their roles and responsibilities in good research practice, (5) describe a valid informed consent process and form, (6) determine the risk and benefits in the study and demonstrate how to balance them and (7) recognize different vulnerabilities of study groups and how to address them.

Dr. Marita V.T. Reyes and Dr. Rhodora C. Estacio who are both members of the Philippine Health Research Ethics Board Committee on Standardization and Accreditation of UP Manila were the main resource speakers of the said training which was facilitated by the R1HRDC-Ethics Review Committee (ERC) together with Ms. Marie Jeanne Berroya and Mr. Andronico Lear De Guzman from the PCHRD. The training consisted of a pre-test, lectures, small group work, presentation and critiques, self discernment and role play, post test evaluation and a daily and final workshop evaluation.

Participants of the training are mostly researchers and members of the Research Ethics Review Committee (RERC) from Virgen Milagrosa University Foundation Inc., (VMUF), Lyceum Nortwestern University (LNU), Region 1 Medical Center (R1MC), Pangasinan State University (PSU), Ilocos Training and Regional Medical Center (ITRMC), Commission on Higher Education (CHED-R1), Department of Science and Technology (DOST-R1), National Economic and Development Authority (NEDA-1), Don Mariano Marcos Memorial State University (DMMMSU), University of Northern Philippines (UNP), Mariano Marcos State University (MMSU), Mariano Marcos Memorial Hospital and Medical Center (MMMH&MC), Northern Christian College (NCC) and Northwestern University (NWU).

Solis, Vice Chairman of R1HRDC and Ms. Lucila Roja, representative from PCHRD awarded the certificates to the resource speakers and to all the participants.

The Strategic Planning Workshop of  Region 1 Health Research and Development Consortium (R1HRDC) was held last April 19, 2016 at the Surfvill Resort, Sitio Malingay Brgy. Balaoi, Pagudpud, Ilocos Norte with Dr. Maria Linda G. Buhat, Assistant Director of the Nursing Services at the Philippine Heart Center (PHC), East Avenue, Quezon City as the facilitator.

Several participants of the planning workshop were from VMUF, R1MC, ITRMC, DMMMSU, DOST, UNP, NWU, MMMH&MC and PCHRD.

The planning started with the presentation of the new Philippine National Health Research System (PNHRS) Strategy Map and Performance Scorecard including the new Vision, Mission and Core Values presented by Ms. Merlita Opena, Chief SRS, RICUD of the Philippine Council on Health Research and Developement (PCHRD), as these were the important areas needed in strategic planning. Dr. Buhat then, discussed her lectures on Strategic Planning which cover the Balance Scorecard, SWOT Analysis, PESTLE Analysis and Mackinsey7 topics. According to the facilitator, Strategic Planning is intended to accomplish three important tasks: (1) to clarify the outcomes that an organization wishes to achieve (2)to select the broad strategies that will enable the organization to achieve those outcomes and (3) to identify ways to measure progress.

In order to achieve the Strategic Plan goals, Dr. Buhat challenged the participants to accomplish and present their committee's Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities and Threats (SWOT), followed by the Three Year Strategic Plan as their output.

The planning was ended successfully with the presentation of committee's SWOT and Three Year Plan.
