Abstract

Fertility  preservation  is  a  growing  field  in  reproductive  medicine  that  may  raise  ethical  questions.  Preservation  of  fertility  must  be  discussed  with  the  patient  if  gonadotoxic  treatment  is  required,  whether  in  the  case  of  benign  or  malignant  pathology,  or  in  the  management  of  transgender  identity.  As  a  result,  surgery  or  chemotherapy  that  has  fewer  adverse  impacts  on  fertility  should  be  proposed  if  this  does  not  alter  the  prognosis  of  the  disease.  If  the  risk  of  infertility  persists,  then  fertility  cryopreservation  should  be  proposed  for  children  and  adults  of  re-productive age. Sperm, oocytes, and gonadal tissue can be cryopreserved for many years.  FIGO  wishes  to  emphasize  the  importance  of  fertility  preservation  in  the  medical and surgical management of patients, and the importance of a specialized, multidisciplinary approach.

KEYWORDS: female, fertility preservation, male, oocytes, ovarian tissue, sperm, testicular tissue

The day before this year’s World Hospital Congress on October 25-27, 2023, the IHF’s Geneva Sustainability Centre, in collaboration with Deloitte, has launched an innovative new platform to digitally empower hospitals and healthcare leaders to drive sustainable, low-carbon, equitable, and resilient healthcare.

The research and development for the Sustainability Accelerator Tool (SAT) began in 2022, soon after the IHF established the Geneva Sustainability Centre to equip hospital leaders with the information, tools, and skills to drive the sector’s transition to sustainability at leadership, management, and institutional levels. Following a period of international consultation, a set of KPIs were defined, forming the underlying framework for SAT. Targeting three key domains (Environment; Health, equity, and wellbeing; and Leadership and governance), SAT has been thoroughly piloted with hospitals from across the IHF’s membership worldwide.

Deborah J. Bowen, FACHE CAE, President of the IHF and President of the American College of Healthcare Executives, stated the case for hospitals and healthcare delivery organizations to start the journey to sustainability:

“The healthcare sector is increasingly aware that it is responsible for more than 5% of global carbon emissions. At the IHF, we recognized that healthcare leaders shared a collective will to transform the sustainability and resilience of service delivery but lacked the support to drive change.

The IHF established the Geneva Sustainability Centre to develop the programmes and resources to support healthcare leaders to become climate leaders. Working in collaboration with Deloitte has given us the capability to develop a cutting-edge tool that hospitals around the world can use to accelerate their actions and impact.”

Supported by the Philippine Council for Health Research and Development (PCHRD),   researchers from the University of the Philippines (UP) Diliman are developing a screening device to provide a low-cost hearing screening device for newborn children.

The project aims to make hearing screening accessible to (local government unit) LGU-operated hospitals/centers in rural and far-flung areas which usually have limited access in the already existing newborn hearing screening in cities.

The project entitled, “Increasing the Rates of Newborn Hearing Screening Through Biomedical Device Research and Development: Pre-Market Development of Locally Manufactured Automated Auditory Brainstem Response Device and Algorithm (HeLe Project),” led by Dr. Luis G. Sison of UP Diliman, is a continuation of the study conducted by the Philippine National Ear Institute and the Electronics and Electrical Engineering Institute of UP Diliman in collaboration with the University of California, which was funded through the Commission on Higher Education – Philippine California Advanced Research Institutes (CHED-PCARI) Project.
