The Department of Science and Technology - Philippine Council for Health Research and Development (DOST-PCHRD) is pleased to announce the call for applications for the 2022 DOST-PCHRD-Undergraduate Thesis Grant in Natural Products.

 

The said program aims to sustain research culture in natural products to increase the number of research and later on build a pool of researchers/experts specializing in the field. it supports the Tuklas Lunas program (Drug Discovery and Development Program) of the DOST-PCHRD, which aims to develop safe, effective, and affordable alternative drugs from the country's natural resources.

 

The search is open to all undergraduate students of Colleges of Pharmacy, Chemistry, Nursing, and Health and Allied Sciences who have thesis proposals on natural products, specifically utilizing indigenous plants in the region. a thesis grant amounting to Fifty Thousand Pesos (Php 50,000.00) will be given to two (2) qualified thesis proposals per region.

 

Upon completion of the thesis project and submission of the required deliverables, six (6) finalists will be chosen to present their completed research during the 16th Philippine National Health Research System (PNHRS) week celebration on August 2023, wherein the top three (3) winners will be selected. Cash prizes include Php30,000.00 for the first prize, Php22,000.00 for the second prize winner and Php15,000.00 for the third prize winner.

Fr. Alfredo Corpuz, was chosen as the Luzon Cluster Winner – Undergraduate Category of the 2021 Best Mentor in Health Research Award. Concurrently, he was also been selected as the National Winner for the 2021 Best Mentor in Health Research Award of the same category from among the other 4 (Four) cluster winners.

Last April 2021, the Department of Science and Technology-Philippine Council for Health Research and Development (DOST-PCHRD) announces their Call for Nominations for the 2021 Best Mentor in Health Research Award which recognizes excellence in mentorship that results in productivity of mentees in health research. It recognizes the vital role of the research mentors who selflessly share knowledge and skills, instill values and attitudes, and inspire those involved in the research process, thereby creating an enabling environment and contributing to capacity-building in research. Awardees were selected per cluster (Luzon, Visayas, Mindanao and NCR) and categorized according to their mentees (Undergraduate Students, Graduate Students and Junior/Early Career Researchers).

 

Worthy to the award, Fr. Corpuz is a faculty member and presently the assistant dean of the College of Health Sciences at the University of Northern Philippines in Vigan City, Ilocos Sur. He is a long-time member of the R1HRDC Ethics Review Committee. A graduate of Bachelor of Sacred Theology, BS in Nursing, BS In Medical Technology, and MS in Medical Technology. Moreover, he had conducted several researches and published both locally, nationally, and internationally and an active researcher in the field of health research funded by various credible funding government agencies.

On August 13, 2021, the Philippine Council for Health Research and Development (PCHRD) and its Mental Health Research Advisory Group launched the manual titled, “Quality Mental Health Research in the Philippines: Conceptualization, Design, and Methods." The purpose of this document is twofold: first, to serve as a working manual to guide mental health researchers in the submission of their proposals to PCHRD and other research organizations and to record the rich discourse on mental health concepts and research framework generated from the write shop conducted last 2020.

 

The PCHRD is planning to hold dissemination activities in the regions by 2022 to promote the recently-released research manual and to capacitate researchers in the development of mental health proposals for possible funding.
