Once again, the Department of Science and Technology-Philippine Council for Health Research and Development (DOST-PCHRD) is pleased to announce the search for the Best Mentor in Health Research Award for the year 2015.

The award aims to recognize excellence in mentorship instils passion among researchers resulting to enhanced relevance and productivity in health research. It also aims to reward mentors who have built the capabilities of researchers in the health sector which led to significant advances in the Philippine National Health Research System (PNHRS) thrusts as identified in the National Unified Health Research Agenda (NUHRA).

The search is open to all Filipino citizen actively involved in mentoring researchers/students or colleagues for at least five (5) years. Past winners cannot be nominated. Nominations can be made by heads of institutions, immediate supervisor/s, colleague/s, trainee/s, or student/advisee. Self Nomination is not allowed.

Each cluster winner (Luzon, Visayas, Mindanao and NCR) will receive a cash prize of P 100,000.00 plus a plaque of recognition. The national winner will receive P 200,000.00 plus a trophy. However, there should be at least 3 endorsed nominees with complete documents in a cluster before the selection process can proceed.

Nominations should reach the consortium not later than January 7, 2015, but the consortium encourages all member and non-member institutions to submit all nominations on December 22, 2014 to Region 1 Health Research and Development Consortium (R1HRDC) Secretariat Ms. Ana Gay D. Ranga at telefax no. 077-792-3133 or 077-617-1517. Qualified nominees will be reviewed and shortlisted by the consortium before it will be forwarded to PCHRD on or before January 14, 2015.

A copy of the guidelines and recommendation form were sent to your respective institutions/agencies for your reference.

The Research and Development Committee (R&D) of Region 1 Health Research and Development Consortium (R1HRDC) had their meeting last October 3, 2014 at the Research Ethics Review Committee (RERC) office of Mariano Marcos Memorial Hospital and Medical Center, Batac City Ilocos Norte.

The main agenda of the meeting is to review and select the best paper among 41 submitted research proposals. The selected papers were as follows:

  • A Randomized Controlled Trial on the Effect of Guava Decoction Perineal Wash on Episiotomy Wound Healing the Pain Among Pimigravis by Dr. Dona Belle P. Borbe of Ilocos Training and Regional Medical Center (ITRMC)
  • Breast Cancer Sub-types as Defined by ER/PR and her expression: Comparison of Clinicopathologic Features and overall survival by  Dr. Marivic Cristobal of ITRMC
  • Significance of Thoraco-Abdominal Ultrasound in Determining the Severity of Dengue Hemorrhagic Fever by Ms. Marivic Andres of ITRMC
  • A Cross Sectional Non-Randomized  descriptive study of Visual Inspection using Lugol’s Iodine in Screening Cervical Cancer and its Precursors in a Tertiary Hospital by Dr. May Delight Galingan of ITRMC
  • Impact Evaluation of the Pantawid Pamilyang Pilipino Program on Health in  Ilocos Norte by Ms. Cheryll Didi Nellie N. Obra of Mariano Marcos State University (MMSU)

Project leaders of selected protocols are required to present and defend their research proposals on November 21, 2014 at the University of Northern Philippines (UNP), Vigan City Ilocos Sur. Research and Development Committee will choose the best paper and endorse to Philippine Council for Health Research and Development (PCHRD) for funding.

The 3rd Quarter Management Committee Meeting of Region Health Research and Development Consortium (R1HRDC), was held last September 12, 2014 in Parian, San Fernando, La Union and was hosted by the Department of Health Regional Office 1.

The meeting was presided by the R1HRDC Chairman, Dr. Maria Lourdes K. Otayza, together with the Assistant Director of Department of Health-R1 (DOH-R1), Dr. Benito Arca, Committee Chairs & Members, and a representative from the Philippine Council for Health Research and Development (PCHRD), Ms. Lucila Roja.

The main schema of the meeting was the Conduct of Committee Performance Assessment and Work Planning for CY 2015. Other matters discussed were the committee’s upcoming activities, RUHRA evaluation, tracking and review.

The event ended successfully with the presentation of each committee’s planned activities for CY 2015.

As a customary activity of the Philippine National Health Research System (PNHRS) once again, the health research community celebrates the 8th PNHRS Week Celebration with the theme “Research and Innovation in Health for Disaster and Emergency Health Management” held last August 12-14, 2014 at the Radisson Blu-Hotel, Cebu City, hosted by the Central Visayas Consortium for Health Research and Development (Region 7).

In line with this event, the participation of the Consortium is crucial in the following activities:  the Inter-regional Oral Paper Presentation and Poster Exhibit Contest (Professional & Student Category), Consortium Poster Presentation- the poster should highlight the RHRDC’s activities aligned with theme of the celebration, and Cluster Presentation.

Dr. Maria Lourdes K.  Otayza, Chairman of   Region 1 Health Research and Development Consortium (R1HRDC), sent her members to the said celebration headed by Dr. Leo B. Solis, R1HRDC Vice-Chair; Dr. Jose B. Orosa III, Chairman, Research and Development Committee; Dr. Unity H. Cortez, Chairman, Capability Building Committee; Dr. Hilarion Maramba, Chairman, Ethics and Review Committee; Dr. Mercita Queddeng, Chairman-Research and Utilization Committee; and Ms. Ana Gay Ranga, R1HRDC Secretariat. Other participants from Northern Luzon Cluster are from Department of Science and Technology headed by the OIC Regional Director Engr. Armando Ganal and other researchers from Don Mariano Marcos Memorial State University.

Finished paper of R1HRDC entitled “Health Seeking Behavior and Health Care Utilization among the Indigenous People of Ilocos Sur” by Dr. Mercita Queddeng and “Devolution as Framework in the Health Service Delivery in Region I” by Dr. Paulito Nisperos, represent the region for Poster Exhibit Contest.

This year’s celebration focuses on the role of health research in disaster and emergency management. As many factors contribute to health outcomes in emergencies and disasters, all plenary and parallel sessions revolve around the key areas, namely: science for disaster preparedness and actions, use of information and communication technology and tools and policies, coordinating mechanisms for service delivery, and role of social media.

8th Philippine National Health Research System Week Celebration at Radisson Blu Hotel, Cebu City last August 12-14, 2014 with the theme “Research and Innovation in Health for Disaster and Emergency Management”

The Combined 2014 R1HRDC Promotional Activities: (Research Exhibit Caravan, Regional Research Contest & Research Dissemination Forum) was held on July 18, 2014 at the AVR Room of Don Mariano Marcos Sate University in Bacnotan La Union with the theme, “Strengthening Collaboration thru Research and Innovation in Health”.

More than 70 participants attended the activity which consists mostly of students and some professionals from the Mariano Marcos State University (MMSU) – Batac City, University of Northern Philippines (UNP) – Vigan City, Don Mariano Marcos State University (DMMSU) – La Union and Virgen Milagrosa University Foundation (VMUF) of Dagupan City.

At around 8:00 A.M., registration of all participants and attendees was conducted for documentation purposes. Afterwhich, Dr. Rudy P. Bareng of the Northwestern University (NWU) – Laoag City, led the invocation followed by the Philippine National Anthem. Shortly thereafter, Ms. Ana Gay Ranga, the R1HRDC Secretariat presented all the participants followed by the welcome remarks of the RUC Chairperson, Dr. Mercita Q. Queddeng. Atty. Benjamin P. Sapitula, SUC President IV and DMMMSU President gave his keynote address thereafter.

During the Regional Research Contest, a total of nine (9) entries qualified in the Poster Competition. In the Oral Presentation, under Professional Category, four (4) entries qualified. While in the Student Category, seven (7) entries qualified. The members of the technical panel of evaluators were Engr. Armando Ganal, to which he served as the Chairman of the said event, Dr. Unity Cortez and Dr. Hilarion Maramba served as the panel of evaluators and critics of the Research Dissemination Forum. All winners of the competition will represent the Consortium in 2015 PNHRS Week Celebration.

During the Research Dissemination Forum, the University of the Northern Philippines, duly represented by Prof. Clarita Cariaga, presented their funded research output entitled “Patterns of Dengue Infection in Region I” as part of the other R1HRDC Promotional Activities.

In the afternoon, the Research Exhibit Caravan showcased four (4) DOST-PCHRD R1HRDC funded research projects.

The activity ended successfully with the awarding of winners and consolation prizes to the participants. A very inspiring closing remarks was delivered by Dr. Flordeliza Bobiles, RUC member (ITRMC) while Ms. Remedios Mangoba of the Mariano Marcos Memorial Hospital and Medical Center – Nursing Staff served as the emcee of the activity.
