A three-day training on Technical report Writing was conducted by the Region 1 Health Research and Development Consortium (R1HRDC) thru the Capability Building Committee (CBC) last November 8-10, 2016 at the Hotel Veniz, Baguio City.

The training course objectives for the participants were successfully attained at the end of the traning as follows : (a) to be able to differentiate technical writing from creative writing (b) to know the general guidelines in writing the different parts of a technical paper (c) to know the different methods of referencing (d) to be exposed to the requirements of various editorial bodies in publishing the research report in medical journals; and (e) to know the general guidelines in making an oral presentation of a technical report.

Dr. Ophelia Mendoza, a former professor from the University of the Philippines (UP) College of Epidemiology and Biostatistics was the training's learning provider. Dr. Mendoza assisted the committee to capacitate more the researchers in the region in coming up with a meaningful and quality research papers through her proficiency and experience in doing tremendous researches.

Participants who attended the training were from Northwestern University (NWU), Mariano Marcos Memorial Hospital and Medical Center (MMMH&MC), University of Northern Philippines (UNP), Ilocos Training and Region Medical Center (ITRMC), Don Mariano Marcos State University (DMMMSU), Lyceum Northwestern University (LNU), Dagupan Doctors Villaflor Memorial Hospital (DDVMH) and Virgen Milagrosa University Foundation (VMUF). Most of the participants completed the series of workshop/training conducted by the CBC, from the Training Course on Basic Research Methods, Training on Data Analysis up to the Training on Technical Report Writing.

As per training evaluation of participants, they requested the committee to continue their plans to support researchers to develop their ability in doing meaningful research projects.

As part of the plan of Region 1 Health Research and Development Consortium (R1HRDC) this year, the conduct of 2017 Operational Planning was held on October 25,2016 at the Board Room of the Mariano Marcos Memorial Hospital and Medical Center, City of Batac Ilocos Norte in conjunction with the 3rd Management Committee meeting.

Dr. Maria Lourdes K. Otayza, Chairman R1HRDC, Dr. Leo B. Solis, Vice Chairman R1HRDC, Dr. Jose B. Orosa III, Chairman on Research and Development Committee (R&D), Dr. Mercita Queddeng, Chairman on Research and Utilization Committee, Ms. Lucila Roja and Ms. Samantha Sevilleno both from Philippine Council on Health Research and Development (PCHRD), and other R1HRDC members from different institutions/agencies attended the said activity.

Before the conduct of the highlight of the said Operational Planning, which is the Work and Financial Plan for CY2017. The following representatives from different institutions presented their reports and studies. Ms. Sevilleno on the Balik Scientist Program of the PCHRD, followed by the presentation of Regional Research Fund (RRF) progress report by Dr. Ja P. Malvar on his study entitled " Efficacy of Mandibular Advancement Device in the Treatment of Obstructive Sleep Apnea Syndrome among Filipinos: A Pilot Study, Ms. Marcia A. Fellizar on her study entitled "Child Abuse Victim Seen at the Mariano Marcos Memorial Hospital and Medical Center-Women and Child Protection Unit: An In-Depth Clinical Study, Mr. Jimmy G. Catanes on his study entitled "Cancer Chemopreventive Activity of the Characterized Bioactive Alkaloid Extract from Sorgum bicolor and Mr. Holden Kirby Valdez on his study entitled "Anti-Thrombocytophenic Activity of Formulated Papaya (Carica papaya) and Guava (Psidium guajava) Capsule on Sprague Dawley (Rattus norvegicus) RAT. Afterwhich, the group conducted the committee performance assessment and work planning.

The event ended successfully with the presentation of each committee's planned activities for CY2017.

The Region 1 Health Research and Development Consortium (R1HRDC) chairman Dr. Maria Lourdes K. Otayza and Capability Building Committee chairman Dr. Unity H. Cortez attended the recently held Department of Health (DOH) 16th National health Research Forum for Action (NHRFA) last September 16, 2016 at the Sofitel Philippine Plaza, Pasay City with the theme, "Laying the Foundation for Stronger Research Translation", together with different individuals involve in health research.

The forum focused on two key themes, namely, Knowledge Translation and Mining and Visualization of Data as means to facilitate transfer of knowledge gained from public health and health system researches.

The DOH-NHRFA has been working to emphasize and strengthen the translation and use of research and evidence, as well as improve discourse on health research and policy development.

The NHRFA is annual event which started in the year 2000 and serves as an avenue to gather, present and discuss the latest evidences in health systems research. It is the goal of the forum to direct the translation of evidences into definitive actions for a better health system. It is attended by policy-makers and implementers, including stakeholders in the government sector, academe, private sector, development partners and civil society.

Once again, the health research community celebrated the 10th Philippine National Health Research System (PNHRS) Week last August 8-11, 2016 at the City State Asturias Hotel, Puerto Princesa, Palawan with the theme “Research and Innovation for Health and the Environment.” Hosted by the MIMAROPA Health Research and Development Consortium (MHRDC), said celebration includes the following activities: workshops, pre-Conference sessions, parallel sessions, opening program and fellowship night. There were more than five hundred (500) participants attended of the remarkable event, most of whom were researchers, professionals and students, academe and medical practitioners.

In line with this, the participation of the Region 1 Health Research and Development Consortium (R1HRDC) in the  Inter-regional Poster Exhibit Contest (Professional and Student Category), Consortiums’ Poster and Cluster Presentation is crucial. Therefore, Dr. Maria Lourdes K. Otayza, Chairman, R1HRDC  witnessed and participated the said  event together with her Co-Chairs Dr. Leo B. Solis, Dr. Jose B. Orosa III, Dr. Unity H. Cortez, Dr. Hilarion Maramba and Dr. Mercita Queddeng with the presenters Mr. Jimmy Catanes and Dr. Ma. Rosita Quitola.

During the opening program, the R1HRDC received a special award from the Philippine Council for Health Research and Development (PCHRD) as the 2nd Place in Best Website Maintenance. In addition to this award, the paper entitled “The Efficacy and Safety of Spirulina Supplementation in the Treatment of Iron Defficiency Anemia in Preschool-Age Children: A Randomized Controlled Trial” of Dr. Maria Rosita Quitola from Mariano Marcos Memorial Hospital and Medical Center won the 2nd Place in Poster Exhibit Contest. Moreover, we brought home the crown as 1st Place in Cluster Presentation.

To capacitate more the researchers in the region in coming up with a meaningful and quality research papers, the Capability Building Committee (CBC) of the Region 1 Health Research and Development Consortium (R1HRDC) conducted the three-day Training on Data Analysis last July 12-14, 2016 at the Veniz Hotel, Baguio City. Said training was a sequel to the Basic Research Methods Training held last October 2015.

The main objectives of the training for the participants were to (1) understand the basic concepts and principles in the application of statistical tools for data analysis and (2) identify the most appropriate statistical tools needed for data analysis and meet the objectives of the research proposals they are developing.

There were seventeen (17) participants who attended the said training most of whom were medical practitioners and members of research institutions. Participants were from Lyceum Northwestern University (LNU), Virgen Milagrosa University Foundation (VMUF), Dagupan Doctors Villaflor Memorial Hospital (DDVMH), Ilocos Training and Regional Medical Center (ITRMC), Don Mariano Marcos Memorial State University (DMMMSU), University of Northern Philippines (UNP) and Mariano Marcos Memorial Hospital and Medical Center.

Dr. Ophelia M. Mendoza a former professor from the University of the Philippines (UP) College of Epidemiology and Biostatistics was the the training's learning provider. This was officially opened by Engr. Ismael Gurtiza, vice chairman of the CBC, followed by an inspiring message from Dr. Leo B. Solis, vice chairman of the R1HRDC.

As a way of introduction and levelling off, participants introduced themselves and answered random questions. From here, Dr. Mendoza presented her objectives and course syllabus. Afterwhich, she articulated on the series of lectures that included the following :

Day 1

Factors to be Considered in Data Analysis, Health Indicators, Data Presentation, Constructing Statistical Table

Day 2

Measures of Central Tendency, Dispersion and Location, Introduction to Statistical Inference, Estimating Means and Proportions and Investigating Relationships Between Variables

Day 3

Looking at Associations Between Variables, Regression and Correlation, Non-parametic Statistical Tests, Summary of Data Analysis Techniques

After the informative lectures and exercises given by Dr.Mendoza, a presentation of research outputs from pre-identified volunteers among the participants was done at the end of the training.

 

 

R1HRDC to address health concerns in Region 1, to fund research proposals up to 500k

Initiated in partnership with the Philippine Council for Health Research and Development and Department of Science and Technology (DOST-PCHRD), the Region 1 Health Research and Development Consortium (R1HRDC) thru the Research and Development Committee (R&D) is now calling for research proposals that are aimed to address pressing and current health concerns in the region.

At least Php 500,000 in funding support from the Regional Research Fund of the PCHRD will be used to support researches spanning National Priority Research Agenda, Regional Priority Research Agenda (Local Governance), Health Needs of Special Group, Bio-Medical Research and Climate Change.

Interested proponents are expected to submit their research proposals in capsule or full blown not later than August 30, 2016. The following format is required for the submitted proposals: (1) Project Title, (2) Project Leader, (3) Significance of the Proposal, (4) Methodology, (5) Expected Output/s and (6) Line Item Budget.

With more than a hundred proposals accepted every year, the project also seeks to uplift local researches to effect change and improve the quality of life of people in the region.
