A group of Bachelor of Science in Pharmacy student researchers from Mariano Marcos State University (MMSU) has been awarded the 2026 DOST-PCHRD Undergraduate Thesis Grant in Natural Products, receiving up to ₱75,000.00 in research funding for their undergraduate thesis.

The student researchers, namely Waylan Kantrel Guiang, Cassandra Jane Batallones, Ruth Danielle Emmace, Meia Nicole Ibus, Rossel Pagnanawon, and Levy Utleg, under the guidance of their thesis adviser, Dr. Ma. Danica Ines-Ramil, represent Region 1 in the grant program following the endorsement of their research proposal by the Region 1 Health Research and Development Consortium (R1HRDC) to the Department of Science and Technology–Philippine Council for Health Research and Development (DOST-PCHRD).

Their study, titled “Molecular Docking, ADMET Profiling, and In Vitro Validation of the Mucoprotective Potential of Psychotria luzoniensis (Tagpong-Gubat) against LPS-Induced Intestinal Inflammation,” investigates the potential mucoprotective properties of Psychotria luzoniensis, locally known as Tagpong-Gubat, a native shrub belonging to the coffee family (Rubiaceae). It examines specific phytochemicals in the plant and their potential to address gastrointestinal inflammation. Through molecular docking, ADMET profiling, and in vitro validation, the research contributes to the exploration of indigenous plants and their potential applications in health and drug discovery.

The DOST-PCHRD Undergraduate Thesis Grant in Natural Products, implemented through the Tuklas Lunas Program, provides research support to undergraduate students conducting studies on natural products with potential health applications. The grant supports the implementation of qualified undergraduate research projects, including expenses related to their approved research activities.

Through its coordination and endorsement of research proposals to DOST-PCHRD, R1HRDC continues to provide opportunities for student researchers and member institutions in Region 1 to access research support and contribute to the advancement of health research in the region.
