To blot another year of success, the country’s health research community commemorated its 11th Philippine National Health Research System (PNHRS) Week on 24-25 August 2017 at Philippine International Convention Center, Pasay City, Metro Manila. It is a gathering of different stakeholders in health research and development to contribute research-based solutions to health problems.

With the theme “Research and Innovations in Health: Empowering and Transforming Communities,” this year’s celebration emphasizes the roles, challenges, and opportunities of health research and innovation in reaching, empowering, and transforming the Filipino communities.

Pre-conference sessions such as Ethics, Society of Health Research Communicators (SHARE) Assembly, Research Workshop, eHealth Summit, National consultation on the development of Technical Review Board Manual, meeting of various PNHRS Committees, Meeting of the Regional Health Research and Development Consortia Secretariat, and Health Research and Development for Disaster Program Review were also made on 22-23 August 2017 at Hotel Jen Manila.

Plenary and parallel sessions was also made that revolved around key areas including National Unified Health Research Agenda (NUHRA), Drug Addiction and Mental Health, Islands of Wealth and Wellness, Health of Marawi: the Psychosocial and Health Concerns of Internally Displaced Persons in areas with armed conflicts, presentation of contributed papers such as 6A: Alternative Gender-Aware Indices for Measuring Poverty: Implications for Healthcare for the Poor and Innovative Strategy Towards Sustainable Control and Elimination of Schistosomiasis in the Philippines.

This 4 day event was joined by over 1,300 participants from all over the country reaching its aim of providing a platform for the different stakeholders in health research and development to interact, learn from each other, share information and experiences, voice their concerns, and to add research-based solution to health problems.

 

MHRDC and R1HRDC Chairs and Members

 

The MIMAROPA Health Research and Development Consortium (MHRDC), the youngest regional health research consortium in the Philippine National Health Research System (PNHRS) visited the Region 1 Health Research and Development Consortium (R1HRDC) on June 27-29, 2017 to benchmark the best practices that made the latter consortium succeed.

A meet and talk session that was held at Mariano Marcos Memorial Hospital and Medical Center (MMMH&MC) in Batac City Ilocos Norte in which the R1HRDC's organizational structure was discussed together with how the consortium runs the organization in a resilient, effective and efficient manner that made it become a well established one. They also visited the Tuklas Lunas Center situated at Mariano Marcos State University (MMSU) Batac City, Ilocos Norte.

Participants from MIMAROPA region were composed of Prof. Marissa Pontillas (Chair, MHRDC),Dr. Patrick Regoniel (Director, MHRDC), Mr. Marvin Plata (Chair, ERC), Dr. Romeo Lerom (Chair, R&D), Dr. Diosdado Zulueta (Chair, CBC), Dr. Virginia Alkiate, Ms. Sol Theresa Logo, Mr. Hagari Toyokan, Mr. Justine Byla-ay (CHED MIMAROPA), Ms. Sabrina Elechosa (SRS II, DOST-PCHRD),Mr.Jezreel Sarabia (member,ERC), Ms. Rhoda Lyn Ramos (DOST MIMAROPA-Project Staff), Ms. Angela Kaye Reyes, Ms. Janet Cayabyab and Ms. Angelie SOngco (DOH-MIMAROPA).

Imparting the strategies and techniques from region 1 were Dr.  Maria Lourdes K. Otayza, chair R1HRDC, Dr. Jose B. Orosa III, chair R&D, Dr. Mercita Queddeng, chair RUC, Dr. Hilarion H. Maramba Jr.,chair ERC with members Dr. Larguita Reotutar, Dr. Marivic Alimbuyuguen and Ms. Anita Criste and Ms. Lucila Roja from DOST-PCHRD.

This undertaking along with the support of the R1HRDC and the Philippine Council for Health Research and Development (PCHRD) is one of MHRDC's ways to achieve their mission to be the catalyst of change not only in research but also in the health of the MIMAROPA Region.

As part of the methodology for developing the National Unified Health Research Agenda (NUHRA), the Department of Science and Technology-Philippine Council for Health Research and Development (DOST-PCHRD), through its partner organizations,conducted a two day regional consultation in region 1 entitled "Organizing Consultative Workshop Towards the Development of the Philippine National Health Research System's Regional Unified Health Research Agenda (RUHRA) 2017-2022.The consultation was held on May 23-24, 2017 at the Northview Hotel, Brgy. Nalbo Laoag City,Ilocos Norte facilitated by the Healthdev Institute.

This consultation was part of the larger effort in developing the NUHRA 2017-2022, which specifies the areas for health research that need to be studied.The regional consultation served as the venue for all relevant stakeholders to create the Regional Unified Research Agenda (RUHRA) priorities.

Participants who attended the said consultation were member and non-member institutions of the Region 1 Health Research and Development Consortium (R1HRDC) to wit: National Commission of Indigenous People (NCIP), Pangasinan Medical Society (PMS), Panpacific University North Philippines (PUNP), Northern Christian College (NCC),Northwestern University (NWU),Mariano Marcos State University (MMSU), Lyceum Northwestern University (LNU),Region 1 Medical Center (R1MC), Virgen Milagrosa University Foundation Inc.(VMUF), Ilocos Training and Regional Medical Center (ITRMC),Commission on Higher Education (CHED),Department of Science and Technology (DOST), Department of Health (DOH),Philippine Information Agency (PIA),Don Mariano Marcos Memorial State University (DMMMSU),National Economic Development Authority (NEDA), University of Northern Philippines (UNP) and Mariano Marcos Memorial Hospital and Medical Center (MMMH&MC).

Speakers during the regional consultation were Dr. Miguel Antonio Salazar and Mr. Teddy S. Dizon bothe from the Alliance for Improving Health Outcomes (AIHO) Inc. and Mr. Paul Ernest De Leon from PCHRD-Research and Development Management Division. On the 1st day, topics discussed were: Introduction to the PNHRS and the NUHRA,Orientation to the NUHRA and RUHRA agenda setting priorities,Inputs:Technical Papers and Regional Situationer,Brainstorming session and plenary.On the 2nd day,topics were: Setting Criteria for Prioritization,Prioritization Exercise,RUHRA 2017-2022:Results of Prioritization,Planning for RUHRA dissemination,funding monitoring and Evaluation of the Regional Consultation.

After thorough review and deliberation of the group,there were eight (8) priority areas created for region 1 under the RUHRA and these were the following: (1) Triple Burden Disease (2) Health of the Vulnerable Populations (3)Drug Discovery and Development (4) Health Technology and Development (5)Food Safety and Nutrition (6) Health Governance and Policies (7) Functional Foods and Nutraceuticals and (8) Health Financing.

The consultation became a good venue for interaction and improved the relations between and among the participants.

To motivate the target stakeholders in promoting productivity and innovation through research, the Region 1 Health Research and Development Consortium (R1HRDC) thru the Research and Utilization Committee (RUC) conducted a regional research conference held on May 25, 2017 at Teatro Ilocandia, Mariano Marcos Memorial Hospital and Medical Center, Batac City Ilocos Norte with the theme:"R1HRDC Bolstering People's Quality of Life through Health Research and Dissemination". Headed by Dr. Maria Lourdes K. Otayza, Chairman, R1HRDC and Dr. Mercita Q. Queddeng, Chairman, RUC, the conference aimed to: (1) provide platform for professional and student researches for health utilization and dissemination (2) strengthen collaboration between researchers and institutions (3) support, encourage and nurture scholarly work of student and professional researcher.The keynote speaker was Dr. Prima Fe R. Franco, OIC President of Mariano Marcos State University.

More than three hundred (300) participants from different member institutions/agencies attended the said conference.
